Electrotherapy and Modalities

At Salus Physiotherapy Clinic, electrical modalities such as ultrasound, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), or muscle stimulation may be one of the treatment options used to help resolve your injury and relieve pain.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a high frequency sound wave that is absorbed, painlessly, by our soft tissues. It has a number of effects at the molecular level including a micro-massage effect on tissues such as muscle, tendon, and ligament. This can be helpful in healing certain injuries, particularly in calcific tendinitis and haematomas or bruises in muscle. Also the early stages of soft tissue sprains and strains may respond to the application of ultrasound therapy and help facilitate healing.

TENS

TENS is a drug-free method to help control pain. Electrical impulses are delivered through electrodes placed on the skin in an attempt to control the brain’s perceived pain impulses. This can be useful as part of a treatment plan for pain control.

Muscle Stimulation

This involves the use of electrical impulses passed through electrodes placed on the skin to stimulate nerve and muscle tissue. It is most commonly utilized to re-educate weak muscles or muscles atrophied from injury or disuse.

Moist Heat

Heat can be applied to many body areas and is considered a useful modality in treating stiff muscles or muscle spasms associated with certain injuries.

Ice

Application of ice helps with pain relief and reduces acute inflammation following injury or soft tissue trauma.
